About this resource:

The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) is a non-profit human rights organisation. We work with communities, social movements, individuals and other non-profit organisations in South Africa and beyond to develop and implement strategies to challenge inequality and realise socio-economic rights.

SERI is a registered public interest law centre and Law Clinic. The litigation team seeks to assist communities and social movements to develop legal agendas for change, which complement and reinforce their other activities, campaigns and strategies. Our practice attempts to address a broad range of strategic needs. These include litigation intended to challenge laws, policies and practices that exclude the poor and deepen poverty; litigation connected to ensuring that our clients have the space to articulate their claims freely and effectively, and providing some clinical assistance to individuals and communities. SERI aims to expand the capacity of civil society by seeking out cases and claims not normally brought or conceived of by other public interest law firms.
